The Diet for Patients with Kidney Disease

Diet, or food, plays an important role in maintaining people’s life. In china, people attach importance to diet and make it as delicate as possible. When people feel ill, they will spend more time on valuing diet or food to adjust the physical condition. When people are diagnosed with kidney disease, what should they pay attention to? The principles for patients with kidney disease should follow are as follows:
1. low salt and low fat
Firstly, patients with kidney disease should limit the intake of salt when they have edema or high blood pressure. The amount of salt every day should be kept at 2 to 4 g. Low salt diet can help patients avoid the retention of water and sodium so that edema and high blood pressure will not deteriorate. Low fat diet can prevent kidney disease patients from getting arteriosclerosis. And one manifestation of kidney disease is arteriosclerosis. Therefore, kidney disease patients should have more plant oil and less animal oil. The amount of plant oil should be kept below 60 to 70 g. In addition, the some plant oil, such as bean oil, sunflower oil, or peanut oil contains less saturated fatty acid and more unsaturated fatty acid, which can prevent patients from suffering from arteriosclerosis and decrease cholesterol.
2. low protein with high quality
Secondly, patients with kidney disease should have less amount of protein and remember the protein should have good quality. If patients with kidney disease take in excessive protein, it will lead more burden to kidney. Protein is essential for human body, but the proper amount is also very important. What’s more, kidney disease patients should also take in more food such as milk, eggs, fish, lean meat, etc.
3. take in more energy
If patients with kidney disease do not take in enough energy, the body will put more autologous protein into use, which makes serum creatintine and BUN increase, and deteriorate the patients’ condition. So taking in enough energy is very important. The amount should be kept at 30 to 35 kilocalorie per kilogram.
Doctors also point out that when people are diagnosed with kidney disease, besides diet, they should also take effective treatment as soon as possible. Food can just be regarded as assistant therapy, which can not catch up the speed of disease’s developing.
