4 Diet Principles for Renal Failure Patients under Dialysis

Due to lost of water, etc, diet for renal failure patients who are under dialysis is different compared with those who do not. The 4 main principles are as follows hoping it may supply help for you.
Firstly, due to bad renal function, too much salt intake for kidney disease patients on peritoneal dialysis can lead to edema. Therefore, they have to eat food with low salt. You are suggested that the salt intake is less than 3g or 2g each day. At same time, patients on peritoneal dialysis should avoid food rich in sodium like soy sauce, aginomoto, oyster sauce, curing food etc.
Secondly, the proper foods for patients on peritoneal dialysis should be low-potassium. Some patients try to eat less food containing too much salt. But they choose eat something containing potassium chloride which is also called sylvine. As too much potassium chloride intake can lead to edema too, patients have to limit the intake of potassium chloride. Besides, too much potassium intake can impose extra burden on kidney. If the urine volume is less than 1000ml or patients have the symptom of edema, they have to limit potassium intake. Then what kinds of food are rich in potassium? They include spinaches, rape, banana, potato, tomato, carrot, peanuts, mushroom and melon seeds, etc.
Thirdly, patients on peritoneal dialysis should limit water intake. Too much water intake can lead to insufficiency of effective blood volume which cause ischemia in kidneys. As a result, it causes damage to kidneys.
Fourthly, for patients on peritoneal dialysis they should limit water intake and salt intake so that high blood pressure will decline. On one hand, decline in blood pressure avoid expenditure on drugs; on the other hand, if the blood pressure is normal, it can protect the remaining renal function. At the same time, they should also limit potassium intake.
