Besides treatment, food care is also important for IgA Nephropathy (Berger’s
Disease) patients, which can help us recover soon. Generally, if the index is
normal and there is no symptom, we have no strict limitation. However, with the
disease developing, we should pay special care on the following cases:
1. Keep a low-salt diet
A low salt diet principle is suitable for all kidney disease patients.
For some patients with IgA Nephropathy, their kidneys lose their function of
regulation of water and electrolyte balance thus causing retention sodium and
water. If too much fluid builds in body, it can strain hearts and lungs.
Therefore, the patients with IgA Nephropathy should keep a low-salt diet to
minimize the stress to the kidneys and avoid fluid retention, especially for
those with edema or high blood pressure. In theory, water in the body can
combine with sodium, thus causing the retention of water and sodium, which
worsen edema ( swelling or dropsy).
2. low potassium diet for IgA Nephropathy (Berger’s Disease)
If the kidneys can not filter potassium, it will cause hyperkalemia. High
serum potassium level can affect the function of heart and even lead to serious
heart failure. The common foods high in potassium mainly include oranges,
bananas, peaches, potatoes, nuts, lentils etc.
3. Keep a low-protein diet
High protein intake can not relieve proteinuria, but can aggravate the
progression of the disease. Therefore, it is very essential to limit protein
intake. From stage 1 Chronic Kidney Disease to stage 4, the protein intake
should be restricted to 0.6~0.75g/kg per body weight.
4. Keep a low-fat diet
In many cases, the patients with IgA Nephropathy (Berger’s Disease) are
accompanied by high cholesterol, which may cause hyperlipidaemia. If the lipid
level is too high, the patients are at risk of developing heart disease and
other vascular diseases.
This is the best food for IgA Nephropathy patients. For more information,
